Welcome to Lessons From an Old Salt! On this website and Blog I am going to pass on the lessons I’ve learned over the past 40 years of building, maintaining and repairing boats and in 100,000 miles of cruising under sail.
When I first went to sea on a small boat in 1975 I never thought it would become a career or that 50 years and over 100,000 miles later I’d still be at it.
Now it is time to pass on those hard-earned lessons, to share all that I have learned with those of you who are interested in or already Cruising Under Sail.
Over the last 50 years I’ve refit 3 cruising boats for myself and refit and repaired dozens more for clients from Maine to Florida and the Caribbean. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t, what gear is really needed and what isn’t.
I’ve experienced the extremes of weather that Neptune, Thor and Mother Nature can throw at you and know first-hand the importance of having a sound knowledge of seamanship and a solid boat under you that you know is going to bring you home again.
These lessons and more I hope to pass on to all who are interested via this website, its blog, video and published articles.
After viewing this site and reading our blog please feel free to e-mail us your comments, questions or ideas for subjects. We look forward to hearing from you all.
Fair winds everyone!
