Question of the week #3
It is Friday again and here is the question of the week, answer will be posted on Monday. Post your answer at the comment box at the bottom of this post or on our Contact page or on Facebook
Scenario;
You are three days out of St. Georges Bermuda bound for Newport RI approaching the Gulf Stream when a lighting strike knocks out your electronic navigation and communication systems. Since your normal navigational procedure is to write your position in the ships log every 6 hours you have a fairly decent idea of your position to begin navigating by Dead Reckoning (DR).
The weather forecast for the next several days is for continued South-Southeasterly winds at Force 3-5 making it a 300+ mile beat back to Bermuda on top of which without electronic navigation Bermuda is pretty small with surrounding reefs well out of sight of land making a DR landfall dangerous, thus you elect to continue on to Newport.
For this question, we will also assume that the sky is overcast or you don’t have a sextant and supporting tables to find your position by celestial navigation.

Question:
Knowing that currents from both the favorable eddy you were in when you suffered the lighting strike, the Gulf Stream itself and from unknown eddies on the North side of the stream are going to be pushing you in uncertain directions at unknown speeds for an as yet to be determined length of time and having only Dead Reckoning left to navigate with what would you select to be your landfall to insure you can find Newport when land is sighted and why did you select this particular point to be your landfall?
Background;
The idea for this question came from repairing a 70’ Swan that suffered a lightning strike. All GPS units on board, even the crew’s personal handhelds run on batteries and not turned on at the moment of the strike had their software destroyed by an electro-magnetic wave the lighting strike generated. The radios and antennas were fried. Interesting though, the lighting did not destroy ships batteries, the engine starter or alternator.
