When it comes to a boats Standing Rigging, the wires that hold the mast vertical, most sailors give it little thought, other than is it tight enough. They do curse it when knots hang up on it as they tack preventing easy headsail trim, but other than that it is usually forgotten.
Shroud rollers are available to help knots slide past the offending wires that grab knots, usually the forward lower shroud and sometimes the upper shroud, and for the most part, these rollers don’t cause any harm. But, there are some plastic shroud roller/covers on the market that are not very good for your rigging.
Specifically, I am speaking about those shroud cover/rollers that fit tight to the rigging, such as those made by Davis Marine that snap on over the wire and, supposedly making it a slippery surface so knots don’t hang up.

In the pictures here you can see the results of tight-fitting shroud covers, the spaces between the strands of wire are full of dirt and debris and the wire is no longer shiny stainless steel. I have no way of measuring how much life expectancy this wire now has but I would be wary of sailing offshore with it.
If you need a shroud roller, use the type made by Bete-Fleming, made of Ash or Teak, they come in two halves that are taped together around the shroud. They have a center hole large enough to allow air and water to circulate freely allowing water from rain or spray to wash any debris out. These rollers last a long time, varnished or left as bare wood, you only need one or two sets, one for the forward lower shrouds and one for the upper shroud. Easy to install and remove when necessary, they won’t harm your rigging.
